Red Ruby

Bureau Fraai
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Red Ruby is a residential building comprising 21 mid-market rental apartments on the former industrial island of Oostenburg in Amsterdam, designed by Bureau Fraai and commissioned by Stadgenoot. The striking monochromatic red facade — featuring bricks, window frames, and railings in the same deep red hue — was inspired by the adjacent historic Van Gendthallen and fits seamlessly into the new high-density urban neighborhood. Studio de Nooyer photographed this award-winning new construction project, which was nominated for accolades including the Zuiderkerk Prize and the Amsterdam New Construction Prize. It serves as a compelling example of architectural photography where the unique materiality and urban context take center stage.
