The museum opened in October 2015. It is the result of moving the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Funchal. In its new form, the museum also has an auditorium, library, shop, cafeteria, restaurant and space for cultural entertainment.

Paulo David’s design work has received multiple awards. It underlines the successful integration of the building into the landscape of Calheta.
